Social media has become so popular that it seems like everyone is active on at least one social network, but which one is right for your business? It’s great that you are seeing the value in social media, but now it’s time to understand how much time you have to invest into each network. It’s essential to choose the best platforms that align well with your content marketing strategy so you can easily deliver the valuable information your customers crave.
So if you haven’t made you content strategy, that’s fine. Maybe that will be a topic for my next, but the first step towards deciding what platforms you should be on is getting to know your customer on a deeper level. When you use social media as a business, you should be marketing one-to-one and not one-to-many. It’s time to be relatable!
Let’s identify your ideal customer. These 5 questions should help you get started:
- What is your customer’s problem?
- How does your customer consume information?
- What values are the most important to your customer?
- Which brands are your customers following?
- What information does your customer search for online?
After you discover your ideal customer, I would suggest starting out with one or two platforms. Let’s break down a few of them. Here are some things to consider when choosing the right networks for your business:
Facebook: Men and women between 25-54 make up 32% and 29% of Facebook users. Only 9% of users are between the ages of 18-24. If your target demographic is a little older, this platform may be for you because 44% of users check Facebook several times a day.
Instagram: Instagram is a great brand awareness tool. If you have an appealing story, share it with your audience with photos and video! With new features such as instagram Live, Instagram Stories, and their advertising capability, it is now easier than ever to tell your story and promote posts to get traffic to your site.
YouTube: this platform is actually the second largest search engine so don’t forget this social network! If you can create or share informative, fun and visually appealing videos of your company, then this social site may be good for your business. Youtube is also owned by Google and increases SEO when it is managed correctly.
Linkedin: LinkedIn is great for B2B companies or if you’re a solopreneur. You can position yourself as an industry leader by using LinkedIn’s blogging feature or pulse by providing quality content through thought leadership. This platform makes it easy for you to network with other professionals.
Twitter: Twitter is a news-centered platform that allows for instant communication with your audience. This platform would be great for providing quick updates or customer service.
Snapchat: Snapchat is mainly used by millennials and is a great network for this demographic. However, it is very hard to businesses to enter this space so I would suggest holding off on venturing into Snapchat until you’re more established on other platforms.
